  • Designing in Rural Highland Contexts: Exploring the Role of Technology in Facilitating Human Connections

    There is a need when introducing new technology in health and social care settings to involve those who will use the technology, or be affected by it, at an early stage of the design process. Experience Labs employ a participatory approach for different stakeholders to share lived experiences, and collaboratively create ideas and solutions for health and social care challenges. In this paper, we propose that the participatory approach of the Experience Labs provides a valuable space for collaboration to explore the potential and impact of supportive technology in rural communities. The Personal Data Store (PDS), herein referred to as the ‘Backpack’, was proposed as an opportunity to improve the experience of accessing services and enable integrated and person-centred care. The project explored the potential solution developed by our project partners: Mydex CIC - a Community Interest Company that specialises in personal data management - together with NHS Grampian and Moray Social Health and Care Partnership. The overall aims of the research project were to explore how people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) would like to manage their personal information in order to improve the experience of accessing services and to understand the potential of the Backpack to support health and care professionals to deliver more integrated and person-centred care. To meet these aims, DHI led a participatory design process with people living with MS and health and social care professionals. People living with MS were identified as highly knowledgeable co-design participants, due to the complex and progressive nature of the condition, requiring wide-ranging interactions with statutory services. Summary Analysis of the conversations, maps and prototypes led to a wealth of insight about the current experience and challenges of service users and providers. A set of principles were identified to shape the development of the PDS and co-created four overarching, but complementary, concepts to inform development. Concept 1: Mapping Interactions The Backpack should map the care interactions around the person, providing high-level information to make visible the complex network of professionals supporting the person. This could be shown as a circle of care or on a timeline. Concept 2: Health Story A 'Health Story' would provide a space within the Backpack for the person to share their story in their own words, using video or written narrative, supported by key dates and facts, avoiding emotionally draining and time-consuming repetition for the person. Concept 3: Smart Form Filling The Backpack could fill up with information as the person completes forms and automatically draws in data from existing sources. The Backpack could intelligently compare data against eligibility criteria, highlighting any appropriate services they may be entitled to access and verifying eligibility for services (e.g. Blue Badge for parking). Concept 4: Tools for the Specialist MS Nurse With permission from the Backpack owner, the system would notify the MS nurse of any changes in their condition or circumstances recorded by the person or their health and care professionals enabling the nurse to better prioritise people who may need their support and email patients via the Backpack. Impact & value Both people living with MS and health and care professionals were very positive about the concept of the Backpack, and saw how it could be used to improve communication and make services more person-centred. We also learned some general qualities people living with MS value from the people and services that support them. Services should be orientated around their personal goals and needs, and should seek to offer convenience to make everyday life easier. People valued services and places that felt safe and welcoming; and professionals who showed understanding about the challenges of living with MS, and were knowledgeable about the people and services that could help. Progress to date The DHI continues to develop and test the concepts outlined by building and developing prototypes in different contexts in our DHI Exchange programme of work. Home / Privacy policy Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) This privacy notice explains how the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) will use your personal information and your rights under data protection legislation. Please note that in some cases you may be provided with a more detailed privacy notice in relation to the particular purpose for which data is collected. This is to increase transparency where required and any additional privacy notices supplement this central notice. It is important that you read this notice prior to providing your information. Who we are DHI is hosted by the University of Strathclyde and is one of Scotland’s Innovation Centres, funded by the Scottish Funding Council and the Scottish Government. It is a world-leading collaboration between the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Strathclyde. The University of Strathclyde, as the host organisation for DHI, is responsible for your personal data in terms of data protection legislation (the controller). Information we collect and use about you DHI will process personal data in relation to the following groups: Industry partners; Health and care providers; Academia and education providers; Wider public sector services; and Members of the public (the potential end-users of digital health and care solutions). In general, DHI will process: Identification details (first name, surname); Contact details (email address, telephone number); Employment details (job title/role, company/sector of employment, workplace address, education, expertise and professional affiliations); Academic profile (education, research interests and other health and care-related interests); Technical information (including internet protocol (IP) address, login data, passwords, browser type and version, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform, and other technology on the devices you use to access our website); Usage information (including information about how you use our website, social media and other services); Marketing and communications data (including your preferences in receiving marketing from us and our third parties, and your communication preferences); and Information to manage events/meetings (see Events below). In general, DHI will collect personal data directly from you (via our Join Our Network form or via email, telephone or in-person enquiry). Why we require this information and our lawful basis In general terms, DHI collects and uses personal information about you to: Deliver services to you and meet its legal responsibilities; Set up, administer and manage user accounts; Facilitate collaboration between members of the DHI network; Keep in touch with you (including by providing industry news and information about DHI events and services tailored to your interests based on the information you provide when you join the network, and if you have subscribed to marketing) Manage and deliver events; Comply with legal obligations (e.g. health and safety, equality requirements and/or licensing requirements relating to events); Manage and respond to enquiries; Maintain our records; and Process financial and non-financial transactions. DHI requires a lawful basis for processing personal data. In some cases, there may be more than one lawful basis that applies. We may rely on the following lawful bases, depending on the circumstances: Consent; Contract; Legal Obligation; Public Task; and/or Legitimate Interests. Where we are required to collect any special category data (for example information relating to health for participants at events), we will process on the basis that: We have obtained your explicit consent; It is necessary for reasons of substantial public interest (equality of opportunity); and/or It is necessary to protect your or another person’s vital interests and you are not capable of giving consent, e.g. emergency situations. Events In addition to the above, DHI may process the following personal data in order to facilitate attendance at an event or conference: Dietary requirements; Accessibility requirements; Geographical location (city/town/region/country); Passport and date of birth details (only where you have requested a letter from us for visa purposes to attend an event); and Payment details (including delivery and/or billing addresses). If the event is being organised with another partner, with whom your personal information will be shared, you will be advised of this when booking the event. Where events involve networking, we may want to share your contact details with other attendees. If we plan to do this, we will ask for your consent when you register for the event. To comply with requirements laid down by funders, DHI may also be required to obtain additional information about individuals attending events (age profile, sex, ethnicity & disability) to help us monitor our obligations under equality legislation. You do not have to provide this information, although it is always helpful if you do. Where this data is collected, we use this in an anonymised and aggregated form which may be shared with the DHI funders (as anonymous and aggregated data), and we do not use it in relation to any decisions about individuals. Photography/filming – at some events photography and/or filming will take place. If this is the case you will be advised in advance and at the event. Where necessary we will obtain consent. Video conferencing – When events are held using video conferencing applications, some personal data may be collected by the companies who own these applications. This may include your name, username, email address, your computer’s IP address and device name. Where meetings are recorded by or on behalf of the University of Strathclyde, recordings will only be retained for as long as is necessary. Where recording is taking place, you will be notified of this prior to the event taking place and it will be clearly visible to all participants during the event. For further information about how third-party applications may use your data, please read the privacy policy of the relevant video conferencing application. Disclosing your information Depending on the reason why you are engaging with DHI, we may have to share some of your personal data with the following third parties: Third party product and service provider; Payment providers; Other members of the DHI network; Funding bodies, for example, the Scottish Funding Council; and Events organisations. Data will only ever be shared where it is necessary. DHI use a third-party mailing application (Mailchimp) to send personalised emails to our network. If we use any third-party tools to collect and process personal data, we will tell you about this when you register (for example, DHI may use Eventbrite or Wix to capture registration information for an event). If you are not satisfied with our response or believe we are not processing your personal data in accordance with the law, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (https://ico.org.uk/concerns/ ). Transferring data internationally If your data is transferred outside the United Kingdom, we will only do this where it is necessary and where there are adequate safeguards in place for personal data. How long your information is retained When we collect or process your personal data, we will only keep it for as long as is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected. Profile registration information/preferences will be retained until you advise us that you no longer wish to be part of the network. Where you have given consent for marketing, your contact details will be held until you choose to unsubscribe. Personal data collected in relation to an event will normally be retained for 3 months after the date of the event. Prior to joining the DHI Design Team in 2014, Cate was a Civil Servant, working as Programme Manager at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in oil and gas decommissioning, and licensing renewables infrastructure at Marine Scotland. Cate’s role within the DHI is to support the work of the DHI Design Team who carry out design innovation research embedded across the DHI project portfolio. She is based in Forres, Moray at The Glasgow School of Art's Highlands and Islands campus. Since joining the DHI, Cate has undertaken research on the challenges of planning in a dynamic and creative environment. She is interested in the positive impacts that participatory design has on wellbeing, communities and services in urban and rural environments. The Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) offers Master's Scholarships to support a talent pipeline and nurture future leaders into the sector. Once you secure a spot on a relevant course, contact your course organiser who will apply for the scholarship on your behalf. The Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) offers Master's Scholarships to support a talent pipeline, and nurture future leaders in the sector. Once you secure a spot on a relevant course, contact your course organiser who will apply for the scholarship on your behalf. Scholarship details The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) awards annual master’s scholarship funding to DHI. Our 2026-27 scholarship window is now open. The deadline for the second round of applications is on the 14th of August 2026. We also reserve a small number of scholarships for January 2027 intake. The deadline for those applications will be in November, but you can also apply before. The scholarship value for 2026-27 is £8,229 per student. Funding is available both for Taught MSc and MRes programs starting in either September or January. Whether you prefer full-time or part-time study, we have options to fit your schedule. Applications must be submitted by your course organiser. Eligible students should work closely with their course organiser who will use the DHI scholarship administration form to apply. For MRes students, a research proposal of no more than 1,500 words is required. Please ensure you read the privacy notice to access the Master’s Scholarships funding in digital health and social care. Eligibility criteria Students are eligible, if they can answer “yes” to all of the following questions: Determine if you are eligible to apply by answering the following questions with a "yes": Are you a British citizen, an EU citizen with Settled Status, or hold indefinite leave to remain status?   Have you been resident in  the UK for at least the last three years (proof may be required)?   Are you (or will you be) an ordinary resident in Scotland when starting the course?   Are you starting a new course?  If you meet these requirements, you can apply by selecting your preferred digital health and care Master’s course at a Scottish University and following the application process. Find out about detailed eligibility criteria on the SAAS website.    To be eligible for funding, your MSc or MRes dissertation work needs to align with at least one of DHI's strategic themes.   If you have any questions or would like to apply, please contact us at scholarships@dhi-scotland.com . Eligible courses The funding is only available to courses at Scottish Universities. Courses should focus on digital health and social care or include modules on the digital transformation of health and social care services Funding is available for both full-time and part-time MSc or MRes courses.  Your dissertation needs to align with at least one of DHI’s Strategic Themes, contributing to the transformation of digital health and social care.  For course leaders It is the university’s responsibility to ensure that applicant students meet all eligibility criteria, and that the student is accepted on an eligible master’s course. Course leaders apply on behalf of the applicant student using DHI Scholarship Administration Form for all (MSc and MRes) courses. For MRes applications, a research plan of a maximum of 1500 words is required using a DHI Research Proposal Template.  To access the forms, email us at scholarships@dhi-scotland.com .   Courses can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Part-time funding is allocated at a 0.5 FTE basis, with the first half in the first year of study, and the second half in the second year of study.  Scholarships are awarded on a fee-waiver basis only and cannot be used to cover other costs, such as living expenses.  If the course fee is higher than the scholarship award, the university needs to agree to waive the excess of the student's fee. In cases where the master’s fee is less than the available award, the excess sum is intended to be used for supporting the student in their studies, such as buying necessary equipment or funding a conference trip to disseminate their research.   DHI will prioritise applications from dedicated taught digital health and care master's courses.  If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, DHI will allocate places proportionally between the applying universities, who will then select the most suitable candidates for the scholarships.  Once approved, your host University and the University of Strathclyde will sign a scholarship agreement and data-sharing agreement. DHI’s strategic themes for research To be eligible for scholarship funding, students must align their master’s dissertation topic to one of the DHI’s strategic themes. As a teacher, it’s been incredibly rewarding to guide our team of four students through the #DigiInventors Challenge. The boys worked diligently on every aspect of the project, from market research to user experience, and even explored manufacturing processes and production costs. The hands-on experience they gained was invaluable and seeing them present their ideas to both local and international teams, a critical step towards ultimately winning the competition, was truly inspiring.     Joanne BoyleHead of Engagement < Return to team Joanne Boyle Head of Engagement Joanne has worked in both health and social care and has operational and strategic expertise across all major care groupings at local and national levels. She qualified originally as an Occupational Therapist but has gone on to work as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Coach and is passionate about the human factors in change management. Technology has been an integral part of all of her roles and she believes strongly in its ability to transform people’s lives. Joanne joined DHI in its inception and has proactively supported its continuous development. She is part of the senior management team and is responsible for stakeholder and collaboration management between academic, business and civic partners.     In response to COVID-19, DHI, NHS GGC, NSS, and Storm ID expanded a web app for COPD patients to self-manage at home, reducing hospital admissions. The "Dynamic-Scot" project used asynchronous messaging and patient data for clinical interventions and machine learning integration within NHS systems. < Return to projects Dynamic Scot Project impact A web-based application that enables COPD patients to self-manage at home, reducing hospital admissions and easing respiratory service pressure during Covid-19 Project resulted in excellent clinical outcomes and positive patient experiences By August 21, 511 patients were accessing the service In response to COVID-19, DHI, NHS GGC, NSS, and Storm ID expanded a web app for COPD patients to self-manage at home, reducing hospital admissions. The "Dynamic-Scot" project used asynchronous messaging and patient data for clinical interventions and machine learning integration within NHS systems. In response to COVID-19, DHI worked with NHS GGC, NSS and Storm ID to support the wider adoption, scaling up and use of a web-based application to support high to medium-risk patients with COPD to self-manage at home. This was to keep vulnerable patients with respiratory diseases out of the hospital during a dangerous period and to take pressure off respiratory services. The original project, the ‘Dynamic’ project, was funded as an Innovate UK project. This ‘Dynamic- Scot’ project built on that work and its aim was to expand the existing COPD Digital Service more widely within NHS GGC and following a gateway review, seek further funding to onboard a second Health Board. The Innovation behind this project was the use of an asynchronous messaging digital service which provides remote support to patients and utilises the Patient Experience and Outcome data to support clinical intervention. Its clinical integration capacity supports the development of machine learning algorithms and as per the LENUS platform, can be effectively integrated into trusted NHS Systems in Scotland. Therefore, this was not the roll-out of an ‘off-the-shelf product’ but a well-designed digital service which optimises patient and clinical interactions. Summary "The DHI team provided wide-ranging support to the inception, funding acquisition, successful delivery and reporting of the DYNAMIC-SCOT project. That input was based on established relationships, a shared vision for health and social care transformation and preceding and continuing strategic advice and support. Specific inputs to DYNAMIC-SCOT included project and program management support, service mapping and implementation-effectiveness activity planning and wide-ranging stakeholder engagement building on DHI’s established contacts and expertise. Continued collaboration with DHI colleagues on next phase of this project - DYNAMIC-SCOT2 – and across our portfolio of activities is greatly appreciated" Impact & value Funding was awarded by Scottish Government in June 2020. The project was delivered through 2020 and 2021 and has been completed. The service was initially expanded across NHS GGC and then was later trialled in NHS Lothian. Work on refining the digital service to make the service as suitable for scale as possible was commissioned and contract managed by DHI and completed. A final NHS GGC toolkit was completed by the DHI Design Team a to support scaling as well as implementation in other Health Boards. Programme Management arrangements and reporting requirements were reviewed throughout the project to be sensitive to the pressures within the service through the pandemic. DHI then focussed its available resources on the development of the Funding Proposal/Business Case Project. The project was successfully delivered with all key deliverables being received on time and within budget by August 2021. This excluded the final evaluation report which was completed and signed off by the Project Board in December 2021 and outlined excellent clinical outcomes and positive patient experiences. DHI developed a proposal for Stage 2 funding which would entail collating wider data sets to continue with the on-going clinical evaluation as well as the refining the emerging business case. This funding request was successful, and this work has been transferred to the West of Scotland Innovation Hub and NHS GGC to implement. Progress to date By the end of August 2021, over 2000 invitations were made and this resulted in 511 patients accessing the service. with some patients enrolled within NHS Lothian as part of a small trial. The digital service continues to be scaled up across both health boards. The final evaluation report was completed in December 2021.
