Professor Sir Harry Burns FRSEBoard Member (University of Strathclyde) < Return to team Professor Sir Harry Burns FRSE Board Member (University of Strathclyde) Sir Harry Burns graduated in medicine in 1974 from the University of Glasgow. In 1984, he was appointed Consultant Surgeon and in 1990, Medical Director, at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. Many of his patients lived in the east end of Glasgow and it was this insight into the complex inter-relationships between social and economic status, illness and recovery that began his lifelong focus to reduce health inequalities. In 1994, he became Director of Public Health for Greater Glasgow and in 2005 he became Chief Medical Officer for Scotland. He was Knighted in 2011, and in 2014, the First Minister presented him with a lifetime achievement award for public service. In April 2014 he became Professor of Global Public Health at the University of Strathclyde. He leads a number of major, multi-agency projects and is a regularly invited keynote speaker. He is a member of the Council of Economic Advisors; a member of the Diabetes UK Board; Chair of the Wheatley Foundation and a member of Johnson & Johnson’s Impact Investment Advisory Committee. As a qualified Programme and Project Manager Pamela has 24 years of experience in UK and international projects. Her career started in managing international development projects in Australia. On returning to London, she moved into the NHS and subsequently spent many years working across healthcare in England and Scotland. Her programmes have spanned public health, commissioning, and service development including scaling of digital health services including the ‘Dynamic Scot’ programme on supported self-management of COPD; and the European ‘Mastermind’ programme in Scotland which paved the way for a national roll-out of Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. He was previously the Chairman of Cardiff University, Deputy Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council and Chaired the Trustee Board of LifeArc. An advisor to public and third-sector organisations, he was appointed by the Prime Minister in 2014 as the Life Science Champion for medical technology. John has served on several UK Government bodies, including the Science Advisory Council for Wales, and was a founder and Trustee of the Francis Crick Institute. He advises the Singapore Government on Life Science matters and chairs the oversight Committee for their Diagnostics Hub. During an industrial career spanning 35 years, he held international leadership positions in Smith & Nephew, Bristol Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson and Amersham plc. She is a seasoned design researcher with a diverse design education and a strong motivation to bring about change. She holds an MRes in Healthcare and Design from the Royal College of Art and an MDes in Innovation and Environmental Design from the Glasgow School of Art. Her undergraduate studies were completed in France at the École Supérieure De Design, Troyes, where she earned a BDes in Interior Architecture and Design. Sonya's design approach focuses on developing solutions and systems that are transition-oriented and mission-driven, integrating design practice, design thinking, and strategic vision. She believes that innovation is inherently uncertain and involves doing things differently in unprecedented ways. Sonya has experience working on a variety of projects, encompassing hospital design and enhancing carer support. Her expertise also extends to addressing prenatal and perinatal mental health issues, particularly surrounding miscarriages and pregnancies. Related Projects < Return to team Carrie Thomson Digital Lifelines Scotland Portfolio Lead Carrie is the Portfolio Lead for Digital Lifelines Scotland, a programme supported by the Digital Health and Care Directorate within the Scottish Government and managed by DHI. Carrie also leads the Chief Scientist Office Reducing Drug Deaths Innovation programme, and both programmes are focused on reducing the risk of death and harm for people who use drugs through digital solutions. This joint portfolio links to Carrie’s academic and NHS background in addiction services and draws on her experience from over 10 years at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the Office for Digital Health. An advocate for health and care innovation, she is interested in the role of digital solutions to improve the health outcomes for people who use drugs and to better meet people's needs across health and care.
