Young people identify mental health as a growing challenge

On Monday 29 November, the 2021 Global #DigiInventorsChallenge Final in association with Glasgow Warriors took place, with eight teams from across Scotland and UAE competing to become their respective national champions and saw both winning ideas focus on mental health.

Our Scottish winners were - You Wish, We Assist from Marr College Troon. Their winning idea is a mental health app for young adults that allows users to set and achieve mental health goals. The app provides motivational messaging as well as breathing and yoga exercises to help improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

Our UAE winners were - Mindful Mandates from Pristine Private School Dubai. Their winning idea is a headband that aims to reduce visual and auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia patients. Sensors built into the headband will feedback brain activity with a paired application that notifies users of any abnormal activity.

Both teams fought off very tough competition and an excellent quality of presentations from our other finalists. This year saw a record number of 150 applications, from 600 students across Scotland and the United Arab Emirates, all trying to secure their opportunity to showcase their idea at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Our finalists included:

  1. You Wish We Assist from Marr College, Troon
  2. Finding Your Feet from Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh
  3. Rainbow Squad from Bertha Park High School, Perth
  4. Egg Shell from Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh
  5. Stride Network from Gems Founders, Al Barsha, Dubai
  6. Hax from Gems Wellington International School, Dubai
  7. The Mindful Mandates from Pristine Private School, Al Nahada, Dubai
  8. Hack O’ Holics from GEMS Modern Academy, Dubai

The standard of the final pitches was excellent and made the judge's decision-making process even more challenging. After much deliberation, You Wish, We Assist, and the Mindful Mandates were announced as the eventual winners.

The teams will now work with our respective partners to develop wireframe prototypes and refine their pitches even more for their showcase opportunity at Expo 2020 in Dubai on 31 January 2022:

  • You Wish We Assist will work with the Scottish Tech Army
  • Mindful Mandates will work with Okadoc
