DHI programme supports under-represented women to turn their experience of health and care into innovative ideas

The Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) is launching its Digital Shoots programme in Dundee, building on the success in Glasgow last month. Innovation 101 takes place on 3 November at Dundee & Angus College.

Funded by the Scottish Government’s Ecosystem Pathways Fund, Digital Shoots supports women who are under-represented in innovation, including women from minority ethnic and migrant communities, to develop early-stage ideas that improve health, care and wellbeing.

The first Innovation 101 information session in Glasgow exceeded expectations. Fifty women registered within ten days, a waiting list was created, and 26 participants attended from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Motherwell and the Scottish Borders. Of these, 42% have experience working in health or social care, and for more than half, it was their first time accessing an innovation support programme.

The day was facilitated by Stuart McDowall, Head of Innovation & STEM, and Michelle McSorley, Lecturer in Corporate Development, both from City of Glasgow College. It introduced participants to problem-led innovation, understanding people's needs, stakeholder mapping, prototyping and Scotland's innovation ecosystem. Participant feedback highlighted the quality of the organisation and the value of what they learned in a single day.

In parallel, DHI is co-designing the Innovation Navigator, a digital tool that will help women identify where their idea stands and find the right support for their next step. Through this work, the programme aims to ensure that access to Scotland's innovation ecosystem does not depend on having the right connections.

The Glasgow Bootcamp begins on 25 November, with the Dundee Bootcamp following in January 2027. By widening access to health and care innovation, Digital Shoots is helping to build a more inclusive economy and to develop solutions that reflect the real needs of Scotland's communities.

Digital Shoots is led by Jennifer Thomas, Project Manager, and Dr Abigail Lyons, Senior Business Innovation Manager, and coordinated by Yazmin Caceres-Fegrero, Project Management & Technology Coordinator. It is delivered in partnership with City of Glasgow College.
